Common Road Features
South Australia’s driving tests take place across a variety of road types, here’s what you’re likely to face:
Roundabouts & Ring Roads
From small single-lane to busy multi-lane roundabouts, especially around Adelaide’s R1 inner/outer ring routes. You’ll need to:
Give way to vehicles already on the roundabout
Signal correctly when exiting
Navigate ring roads like South Road with controlled precision
Regional & Rural Driving
In regional centres (e.g. Mount Barker, Port Augusta, Whyalla), expect:
Wide, open roads with minimal traffic - ideal for practising speed control
Varying road conditions, including narrow country lanes and occasional gravel edges
Our Tip: You’ll need to show good hazard management and car control
Speed Zones & School Crossings
Metropolitan test routes often include multiple speed limit zones:
40 km/h school zones around primary schools
60 km/h suburban roads
70 – 80 km/h main roads - changing frequently with signage
Our Tip: Be sure to spot and obey school crossings and adjust your speed early.
Traffic Control & Signage
You’ll be tested on your observation and decision-making at:
Traffic lights intersections, with full stops at red and correct queue positioning
Give-way lines at uncontrolled or minor intersections
Our Tip: Use SA’s official System of Car Control: Select, Mirror, Signal, Brake, Choose Gear, Mirror, Evasive Action
