NSW Practical Driving Test Locations

Driving tests in NSW aren’t conducted at general "service centres" alone - you need to visit specific Driver Testing Centres managed by Service NSW in partnership with Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

Where Tests Are Held

Dedicated Driver Testing Centres

These specialised locations offer both written and practical driving tests. Examples include:

  • St Marys Driver Testing Centre - practical tests Mon–Fri, 8 am–4:30 pm

  • Lismore Driver Testing Centre - bookable weekdays by appointment

Select Service NSW Centres

Some standard Service NSW centres also conduct practical tests, typically in quieter venues. For example:

  • Rockdale Service Centre - weekday and Saturday tests available, with dedicated quiet-hour slots.

Booking & Testing Info

  • General centres: Use the online booking tool to schedule both hazard perception and practical driving tests.

  • Quiet Hour Options: Centres like Silverwater and Rockdale offer quieter testing times ideal for nervous drivers.

  • What to expect: Arrive ~15 minutes early, bring your own car, eyes checked, and tests run by a licensed TfNSW or Service NSW assessor.

Why This Matters

  • Accurate Route Training - Practising the actual roads around your test centre is proven to increase route familiarity and confidence.

  • Location-Specific Advice - Each centre has unique traffic conditions - from suburban roundabouts to urban school zones - and our app reflect this.

Common NSW Road Features

Test routes are carefully planned to replicate everyday driving scenarios across Sydney and more regional towns. Whether you’re taking your test in the city or on suburban streets, these are the key road types you’ll likely encounter:

Roundabouts & Traffic Islands

From simple suburban versions to multi-lane designs. Be ready to:

  • Give way correctly (to vehicles already in the roundabout)

  • Choose the correct lane before entering

  • Indicate as you exit

Our Tip: Learning to judge when it’s safe to enter - even if you think you "should" yield to the right - can boost your confidence.

Intersections

  • Traffic lights with controlled lanes

  • Uncontrolled 'give way' intersections which still require complete stopping and giving way when necessary

  • Multi-lane setups with turn lanes

Our Tip: Staying calm and observant is key to passing.

School Zones & Variable Speed Areas

Many tests include areas with changing speed limits:

  • 40 km/h in school zones

  • 50–60 km/h in residential neighbourhoods

  • 70–80 km/h on busier arterial roads

Our Tip: Your speed doesn’t need to match others, just the posted limit, which demonstrates good judgement.

Expressway Entry & Arterial Roads

While the test avoids freeway driving, you might be asked to:

  • Merge onto high-speed feeder roads (e.g. Pennant Hills Road leading to the M1)

  • Navigate lanes and mirrors on multi-lane arterials (like busy suburban thoroughfares)

Our Tip: Practice merging confidently and maintain smooth lane discipline.

Local & Residential Streets

These quieter streets are popular for demonstrating:

  • Reverse or parallel parking

  • Three-point turns

  • Pulling over and moving off safely

Pedestrian & School Crossings

Watch for:

  • Zebra or signalling crossings

  • Child crossings near schools

  • Bus zones and school bus stops

Our Tip: Showing anticipation and stopping early is vital.
