Government-operated, they provide a range of essential services. The Department of Transport manages service centres that assist with driver licensing, vehicle registration, and marine licensing, ensuring compliance with regulations.

Common Road Features

The routes are designed to test how you deal with everyday driving situations in WA, so it’s always a good idea to get familiar with the types of roads and hazards you’re likely to encounter.

Roundabouts

WA loves a roundabout - and your test route probably will too! Expect at least one, and often multiple in a row. You'll need to:

  • Choose the correct lane on approach

  • Indicate properly as you enter and exit

  • Give way to traffic already on the roundabout

Our Tip: Practise both single and double-lane roundabouts, especially near busy areas like Midland, Cannington or Mirrabooka.

Speed Zone Changes

Speed limits can change quickly - from 70 down to 50, or even 40 in school zones. Examiners need to see that you're alert and adjusting your speed early and safely.

Pay attention to:

  • School zone signs and times

  • Roadwork zones

  • Suburban streets with lower limits

Merging and Slip Lanes

You'll often need to merge onto busier roads or exit using slip lanes, testing your observation and timing. Make sure to:

  • Check your mirrors and blind spots

  • Indicate well in advance

  • Match the speed of flowing traffic when merging

Pedestrian Crossings

Zebra crossings, school crossings, and intersections with pedestrian lights are all features of many WA routes. Examiners will check that you slow down accordingly and prepare to stop - even when no one’s crossing.

Residential Streets and Parking Manoeuvres

Most WA test routes will take you through quiet suburban areas where you’ll be asked to:

  • Do a reverse park or parallel park

  • Pull over and move off safely

  • Perform a U-turn or 3-point turn

Our Tip: Try practising near your chosen test centre at different times of day, and in different weather conditions. You’ll get used to traffic flow and tricky intersections that will feature on test day no matter what time your booking is.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not exactly. Each test centre has a selection of possible routes, and the assessor picks one at random on the day.

That’s why it’s helpful to practise all route variations using our app, so you’re ready for all of them.

  • Usually around 35-45 minutes, including the briefing at the start.

During this time you’ll need to demonstrate that you can drive safely in normal traffic, obey road rules, and perform common manoeuvres like parking and turning.

  • Yes, as long as it’s roadworthy, registered, and meets the Department of Transport’s testing requirements.

  • There are two types of errors: non-critical and critical.

You are allowed no more than 8 non-critical errors (such as stalling or rough gear changes), but any critical error - such as failing to give way, running a red light, or endangering others will result in an immediate fail.

  • Yes - our routes are based on real-world tests, and have been made using a combination of actual live test GPS data, instructor feedback and route video analysis.

While we can’t guarantee the exact route you’ll be assigned on test day, our app gives you the best possible chance of passing.
