Victoria Service Centres
VicRoads Customer Service Centres are official locations where both learner and probationary drivers complete driving assessments. They are run by the state government and offer a wide range of driver-related services:
Booking and conducting driving tests
Issuing and renewing learner permits and driver licences
Processing vehicle registrations and transfers
Managing hazard perception tests (HPT)
Providing road safety information and support
In addition, they encompass a wide range of sectors, including health, education, and community services. The state hosts numerous medical clinics, hospitals, and healthcare centres, ensuring that residents have access to quality healthcare services. Education service centres offer information on schools, enrollment procedures, and educational resources for students and parents.
Common Features in VIC Test Routes
VicRoads routes are designed to replicate real driving conditions, so here's what you can expect:
Roundabouts & Multi-Lane Intersections
Routes frequently include single and multi-lane roundabouts, plus multi-lane intersections that will require good lane choice and clear signalling. Centres like Ringwood and Bundoora are known for busy roundabouts and lane merging.
School Zones & Speed Limit Changes
You may be taken through residential streets with 40 km/h school zones, ad also streets with frequent speed adjustments. Places like Broadmeadows, Heatherton, and Bundoora have several school zones where you’ll need to monitor your speed.
Lane Changes & Merging
Expect to merge onto multi-lane roads and change lanes during your test - especially along major thoroughfares. Ringwood and Coolaroo, for instance, have busy multi-lane environments that will test your observational and safe merging skills.
Residential Streets & Quiet Zones
Part of your route will take you through residential streets. These will feature reduced traffic, tighter turns (at lower speed), and will be the location for your parking manoeuvres.
Hill Starts & Slight Gradients
Some test centres like Ringwood feature gently sloped roads where you'll be asked to perform a hill start to demonstrate control and smooth clutch use.
Insider Tip:
Every centre has its quirks. For instance, Carlton’s quiet inner-city roads and tram routes differ from the harsher grading in Bundoora. Download our app and practise the roads around the actual test centre until you're totally familiar.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
It typically takes 30-40 minutes, and is divided into two stages: a simpler first stage (quieter traffic), followed by a more challenging second stage (busier conditions).
-
Your assessor will likely change the route slightly to mitigate any delays. As long as you complete the minimum number of asessable tasks - at least 5 in Stage 1, and at least 17 across both stages, your test will still be valid.
-
Yes, you can - providing:
It meets requirements (e.g. not an electronic park-brake solo test vehicle)
It’s roadworthy, registered, and insured
Our Tip: Make 100% sure everything works! The pre-drive safety check will test your lights, indicators, mirrors, horn, handbrake, wipers, and more. If your car doesn't pass the test, you can't take your test!
-
The biggest culprits include:
Poor observation at junctions
Bad mirror checks during lane changes
Improper signalling or moving off
Poor car control or positioning
-
Reverse parallel park or 3-point turn
Lane changes and turns
Reversing and moving off
-
No you don’t - you will still be expected to follow examiner directions even if you know the routes.
Practising through our app will help you feel more comfortable and prepared no test day.
